Feathers and the types of feathers used by tribes can have variations in their meanings from tribe to tribe.
Generally speaking, feathers like eagle feathers are considered sacred because of the relationship and proximity that eagles have with the heavens and the Creator. It’s a symbol of above.
To be gifted an eagle feather means that you have earned it is some regard; through your clan group, dance group, transition to adulthood, academia, or an act of courage or bravery.
Perhaps this was reminder of how the feather was first received, or an acknowledgment of an act unnoticed?
I would talk this over with an elder to get their perspective.
