Derek L. Hopkins of the Meherrin Nation is committed to Native youth not only in his home state of North Carolina but across this country. Derek is most passionate about the law and he believes that familiarity with the law can reduce the percentage of arrests of all Natives especially the youth. Derek also believes that cultural is a first priority to leadership and often says “You have to know who you are before you can lead anyone else”. Derek is a traveling straight dancer and southern singer, but keeping to his roots he can also be found at Iroquoian social dances and ceremonies.
