Hi auntie, I have a dilemma. I’m a little over a quarter Native American, and the rest white. My family is immersed in our culture. I want to be apart of the indigenous community here but I feel like I’m culturally appropriating by also being white.

Dear relative,

Thank you for your question, I think a lot of people who are multi-racial feel this way. I am always glad to hear when people want to explore their Native identity and heritage.

Native American cultures are diverse and beautiful. This exploration should be conducted with respect to our ancestors, past present and future. By exploring YOUR heritage you are in no way being culturally appropriative. Explore away! We welcome you with open arms. Most Native people come from a diverse and beautiful cultures.

Last fall I answered a similar question that you might find helpful. Check on WeRNative’s website here.

Good luck on your journey.
