How do I stop a cyberbully?

How do I stop a cyberbully who keeps bothering me and posting things about me that aren’t true?

Alissa, I’m sorry you are being bullied. Bullying sucks and you don’t deserve to feel uncomfortable online, in school, or anywhere else. Thisis my advice- talk to a trusted adult (like a teacher, counselor, or relative). Together you can create an action plan to stop your cyberbully in theirtracks.

Here are some things you can think about doing depending on your situation:

  • If you feel comfortable (and safe), stand up to the bully online and in person and tell them to stop posting untrue things about you.
  • But don’t retaliate through posting negative things about your bully. Also don’t threaten your bully. It might get you in trouble! Plus you’re If you feel comfortable (and safe), stand up to the bully online and in person and tell them to stop posting untrue things about you.
  • Report what you are experiencing to the social network (like Facebook) where the posts are being made, sometimes they will shut the person’s account down. You can also block a bully’s texts, phone calls, and online messages. Take some time to learn about the security settings on your accounts.
  • Keep evidence in case the bully doesn’t stop and you need to ask for help from law enforcement.
  • If the bullying is being done by a person at your school, be sure to let the principal know. They may also be able to help you by following your school’s anti-bullying policies.
  • If you try these things and they don’t help or if you ever feel unsafe, call your local police.
  • Check out the bullying resources on our Resource Page to get more tips.

Alissa I hope these suggestions are useful. If anyone else has had experience in this area and would like to give Alissa some advice, write it in the blog post below. Together we can stand up to bullies and make our schools and community events fun and safe for everyone.

Take care Alissa and keep me updated.
Love, Auntie
