How do you deal with drama i.e., friend’s not getting along or talking about you behind your back

Dear relative,

I am really sorry to hear that you are experiencing drama with your friends and that they are talking about you behind your back. Our friends can bring joy into our lives. However, sometimes, our friends can also cause us a lot of stress. This is especially true if you have friends who tend to overreact to things. There are a number of things you can do to preserve your friendships, and if not your friendship, at least your sanity and mental health.

In healthy relationships, what is important is communication. Communicating with your friends and trying to work through problems is one of the most important ways to smooth over drama. Ultimately, by talking with your friends will your friends you can figure out a ways to get past whatever drama has put your friendships at risk.

If your friends are talking about you behind your back, there are a number of things you can do.

  • First, you can ask them not to.
  • Ask friends involved in the drama if there is anything you can do to help.
  • When talking to them, try to identify the problem and see if there is a larger issue going on. Talking is the only way to find out if someone is in an abusive relationship or is suffering from some other difficulties in their life.
  • Explain that “talking it over” with a non-interested third party (like a trusted adult or counselor) might help solve the problem. It might give everyone some perspective.
  • Don’t get directly involved, but rather, be the person who is happy to listen and offer feedback.

If they continue to talk about you in ways that are hurtful, then I would question if they are your friends, or not.

Try to seek out friendships with people who make you feel good and loved.

Good luck,

Auntie Manda
