Hi auntie, I’m the only Native at my school. I want to be able to go into the native studies class and answer their questions (like a speaker). How do I go about this?
What a great idea! I’m sure the teacher would be stoked to have you as a guest speaker.
Sharing about your cultural and traditional experiences can be incredibly empowering and has the potential to be eye-opening to those in the class, especially because they likely signed up for the class because they were interested.
Talk to the teacher and let her know you’re interested. Ask for the class syllabus to see if there are upcoming topics you feel comfortable sharing on. Ask the teacher if there are topics she thinks you would be a good guest speaker for and take it from there.
To get ready; clearly identify your message – talk to your family or elders to see if there’s anything you’re missing.
When speaking, let your message flow and make it unique and relevant to the audience. Send us a video, if you can!
