ASK YOUR RELATIVE QUESTIONS

Hey Auntie! My non-Native friends don’t see why it’s such a big deal that the R-word name has been banned. How do I explain this?

Hey there,

There’s a lot of back and forth on this one, with a lot of different emotions ranging from ‘what’s the big deal’ to ‘this is a fundamental value’.

I have been asked this question before and my response was; what happens when you dress up like someone from a different culture? What types of things do you start saying? How do you start acting?

This reduces us to caricatures, to inhuman cartoons, that doesn’t move us past the 1900’s. And what this does, is that it does not allow us into the conversations of today. And that is major, that keeps us from our land, water, education, and health rights because we are seen as not existing anymore.

There’s a great video you can share with your friend called More Than a Word. Thanks for doing your part!
