ASK YOUR RELATIVE QUESTIONS

How can I find my ancestors clan? I have her name but not her maiden name and I called the Mescalero Apache office. They said all parents have to be registered. My grandma is the only one who would qualify under blood quantum, and her mom is 1/2 MA.

Hi there! Well, there’s no time like the present to start uncovering more about where you come from.

It seems like talking to your grandma (if you haven’t already) would be a great place to start.By asking her simple questions like, “Can you tell me what names you mom used, or what names did you heard growing up?”, you may be able to start piecing things together. I’m assuming it’s your great-grandma we’re talking about.

I would also ask these questions from other family members who may be able to provide a little more information. And, if it’s helpful write this all down in a journal. Sometimes things that don’t make any sense initially may start to once you’ve gathered more information.

If your grandma would be willing, see if she would let you help her enroll. With that being done, perhaps the enrollment department could be more helpful with helping uncover more information. Otherwise, you can see about the local Mescalero Community library for their records department. They may encourage you to look at other larger databases like the University of New Mexico or other sources. You’ll have to ask for their suggestions on where they would recommend you look.

I hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Auntie Manda
