ASK YOUR RELATIVE QUESTIONS

My friend made a comment about a video she’d seen of an POC dancing, and how she was shocked on how they were ACTUALLY good at dancing. When me and a friend said she sounded racist, she got mad and sat at a dif table(lunch). What do i do

Well, when we see or hear someone being intolerant of another culture, it’s good to speak up! So good on you.

There are ways of doing this that might be better than others, so when you are talking to this person, I want to encourage you to be patient and non-judgmental.

This will help the conversation. If your come at her like a “I can’t believe you that you think just because someone is POC that they would not be a good dancer!” approach, this person is likely to shut down and become defensive, which doesn’t help either one of you. And, that might explain why she ran off. She might have been embarrassed too. Then no one has learned from the situation.

Instead, go out of your way to try and show her the positive things POC are doing.

Ultimately, you can’t change the way this person feels, but you can show her the awesome things POC people are doing! While you’re at it… share them with us! We’d love to hear from you.

Good luck! We’ll keep trying to do our part, if you do yours.
