More than 3,000 American Indians and Alaska Natives have been infected by HIV. Think you’re not at risk? Think again – Half of new HIV infections occur among teens and young adults!

World AIDS Day is December 1st. Here’s what you can do:

Get ideas and online resources: worldaidsday.org
Host a luncheon with community members to discuss STD/HIV and other issues affecting teens and their health.
Organize a Wall of Moccasins in a prominent place, to honor Native people who have died from HIV/AIDS.
Organize a testing event for your school or clinic: cdc.gov/stdawareness
Organize a Benefit Concert, Open Mic Night, or Poetry Slam for your cause
Watch and discuss videos from Native STAND, or create and share your own HIV prevention videos: Youtube.com/user/nativeStand7

What I noticed growing up and to this day is that baloney sandwiches are a popular dish in Native communities. There is a bit of history to why that it is but that’s another story for another day

If you are someone that regularly enjoys a baloney sandwich, maybe you were told that it isn’t that blood sugar friendly. The thing is, if you grew up eating this and enjoy it, it’s hard to just remove it from your diet. This is why I wanted to share a few tips on how you can make this sandwich more blood sugar friendly instead of cutting it out.

However, one thing that needs to be understood is that some people don’t have the food access or availability to make much changes to their meals. Not only that, but some just prefer to eat the sandwich the way they always have and that’s ok. So no, you don’t need to justify why you eat a baloney sandwich, even if it's on white bread and has no vegetables. When you have limited food choices, you have to work with the resources you have. Maybe this means talking to your health care provider or a social worker about helpful resources in the community or other government assistance programs. Maybe this means working on meal timing and spreading your carb intake throughout the day rather than just eating it all in one sitting. Maybe this means learning to adjust your insulin for times where you don’t have as much food access. Maybe this means making changes to the beverages you drink or incorporating physical activity, etc. Blood sugar management is not black and white and will look different for everyone. Also, remember that food is just one piece of the puzzle and there are also other lifestyle strategies to help manage blood sugars that don’t include food 💖
