Philip Douglas

My name is Philip Douglas. I am 16 years old, I am an enrolled member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma, and I am also of Comanche, Kiowa, Apache, Creek, and Cherokee descent. I am currently serving as a Generation Indigenous Youth Ambassador and Center for Native American Youth Ambassador, serve as a volunteer for Indian Health Service and Indian Education Programs. Last year I attended the White House Tribal Youth Gathering and I served as a White House Tribal Nations Conference Youth Delegate, where I was selected to participate in a youth panel with President Barack Obama and made a MTV Rebel Music: Generation Indigenous Soaring video. I am a member of the Norman High School’s track and cross country teams, Norman High’s Indian Club, and United National Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY).

I recently found out I’m 1/8th Indigenous on my mom’s side and want to learn more about my tribe. When I ask my mom, she says I’m not enough blood quantum and should learn about ALL indigenous cultures rather than our specific tribe (which she won’t tell me) if I’m interested. Even when I ask for other family’s contact info, it’s a toss up on whether or not they’ll even acknowledge me because I’m trans. What do I do?
