We R Native is designed and managed by the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board. We R Native is a multimedia health resource for Native youth, by Native youth. The service was designed using behavior change theory and extensive formative research with AI/AN teens and young adults across the U.S. We design our health messages to address the social, structural, and environmental stressors that influence adolescent health; with particular focus on the prevention of suicide, bullying, STDs, teen pregnancy, and drug and alcohol use.
In 2009, the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board teamed up with Indig -> One Fast Buffalo to help conceptualize and select the We R Native (WRN) name, design the logo, and develop the website’s navigation and imagery, with substantial iterative input from AIAN youth along the way. The logo was designed by Victor Pascual (Navajo/Maya), who now runs Digital Navajo, a multidisciplinary design and branding studio. We R Native strives to address the health and social issues important to AIAN youth, while promoting holistic health and positive cultural and self-identity. The We R Native website and brand are the result of our collaborative efforts.
