BRAVE

Sometimes asking for help is the bravest thing you can do.

BRAVE is a new text messaging series that follows the story of three friends – Alex, Chris and Benny – over 7 video episodes, as they experience and overcome common life challenges, like intimate partner violence, alcohol misuse, and suicidality.

BRAVE was designed for Native teens and young adults. The series shares wellness strategies and encourages you to get support from family and friends when things get tough. Simply text “BRAVE” to 94449 to sign up.

BRAVE is a text message intervention developed and administered by THRIVE, the suicide prevention project at the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board. Participants reported improvements in resilience, coping skills, and better self-esteem.

Hello Auntie! I’m Nehiyawak and a member of the Cold Lake band of First Nations. The twist in my story is that my father is dead and my uncles are totally disconnected from our Cree heritage. My grandma still lives on the Rez in Alberta (the rest of us are American), but she has severe dementia. Therefore, I make my own regalia and am learning to dance on my own. I want a feather, and cannot get one from a repository because I’m First Nations, not Federally Recognized. What now! My friends and mentors are all Salish and Blackfeet and they also know nothing about Cree-specific tradition.
