ASK YOUR RELATIVE QUESTIONS

Approaching Elders

Q: How can I approach an Elder?

You approach an elder with respect.

Historically among my people, the Cheyenne, we would put a piece of lump of coal in front of an Elder, especially if they were a person who’d been through our ceremonies to protect them from anything we might be carrying.

And to approach an Elder today? Again, with respect, with kindness. Maybe bring a plate of food, bring a treat.

I used to see people when I traveled with my grandfather and they would come up to him and they would kneel next to him and then they would talk to him in a respectful and a kind way. That’s all you have to do.

Come talk to us, we’d be delighted to have conversation with you.

Take care,
