Humor is Sexy (Sometimes)

There are many qualities that can make someone sexy or attractive. Physical appearance is just one of them. Personality traits, like humor, can also be attractive.

This article addresses why humor is sexy, as well as times when it may be inappropriate to use humor.

Why is Humor So Attractive?
A lot of people seek out potential partners with personality. And humor is one of the most common traits we as humans seek out. Why? According to Dr. Madelijn Strick, a professor at Utrecht University who specializes in humor studies, our brain lights up the moment we understand a joke. This is the same area that comes to life when we experience things we enjoy, like eating sweets and having sex. So, humor can literally register in our brains as joy.

Also, as Native people we appreciate humor. Many of us use humor to strengthen our bonds with our friends and family members. For example, a lot of us connect by watching funny movies or cartoons, and we demonstrate our love for each other through gentle teasing.

Finally, showing others that you’re outgoing and funny, can make you appear less intimidating, especially if you use humor in positive, non-hurtful ways.

When Humor is Not Okay
Although humor is definitely an attractive trait, there are times when it’s not appropriate to be funny. Some examples of when you may not want to make a joke are:

  • Right after a traumatic event
After a traumatic event, someone might still be in shock. Telling a joke at this time may not be appreciated. Rather than lightening the mood, it might feel like you are minimizing their painful experience.
  • To degrade or bully someone
At times, people may use humor to make fun of others’ appearance, intelligence, or hobbies. Joking about the way someone looks or acts can be extremely disrespectful and can deeply hurt or offend someone.
  • In a professional setting
In some settings, coworkers might joke around with each other in a lighthearted way. But during a work meeting or another time when your attention is required, humor might be seen as unprofessional. A good tip to keep in mind is that at work you never want to say anything that you wouldn’t want everyone to hear. Why? At work most of the things you say or write do not stay private.

Finally, remember that timing is key. For example, making a joke or interrupting someone by being “silly” can not only be disrespectful, but it can potentially damage the way people view you. It can also get you in trouble depending on the situation.

So, Can Humor Really Make You More Attractive?
Yes! Depending on the situation and type of joke, humor can most definitely make you more attractive. Having a funny, outgoing personality can make you more memorable, unique, and potentially more approachable; however, humor has a time and a place. Remember, when it comes to life and love, knowing when to use humor in a respectful way is key.
